Has this ever happened to you? You get a gorgeous new color at the salon, but a few weeks later it looks dull and dingy. The trouble isn’t with your color, it’s with your maintenance routine. A few changes in your daily and weekly habits can make a big difference in the life of your color.
1. Step Away From the Cheap Shampoo
The number one thing you can do to keep your color looking fresh is to choose the right shampoo and conditioner. The cheap price on those drugstore bottles might be tempting, but the fastest way to strip and fade your color is to use shampoo with harsh additives like sulfates or sodium chloride.
Instead, invest in a salon-quality shampoo and conditioner that are specially formulated for color-treated hair. Anything from the Pureology line is a good choice, and they even have specific formulas suited to curly, dry, or damaged hair so your products can do double-duty.
2. Wash Your Hair Less
We know what you’re thinking—gross, right? Actually, it’s better for the health of your hair to wash it a few times a week rather than every day, and it will also keep your color in good shape for much longer.
If your hair gets too greasy between washes, a quality dry shampoo (like Pureology’s Fresh Approach) will absorb oil and excess shine.
3. Cold Water Rinse
This is a tough one for some people, but if you can stand it, rinsing your hair with cold water can help your color stay true longer. This is simply because hot water washes away more color. And hey, a nice lukewarm or cool shower can feel pretty nice in the warmer months.
4. Avoid Fading Agents
The two big enemies of your salon color are sun and chlorine. If you’re serious about making your color last, wear a hat or wrap a scarf around your head when you know you’ll be out in the sun for a while. If you can’t imagine skipping your weekly swim, tie your hair up out of the way or wear a swim cap. This will prevent that dreaded greenish hue that can develop with too much exposure to chlorine.
5. Try a Gloss or a Treatment
Glosses and treatments help extend salon color and give you great shine, which is why we offer both of them as additional options with any color treatment at Clipzone. If you had your color done somewhere else, you can come into the salon and get a separate treatment or purchase any of our color insurance products such as Redken Magnetics.
Proper after-color care can make your hair look great and help you go longer between color appointments. Isn’t that worth a little extra time and attention?
